Trombonist David Gibson's newest recording is titled Inner Agent (Posi-Tone,
2016) and is his seventh as a leader. It’s a set of music that was specifically
written for the musicians in the band and is influenced from the leaders latest
life experiences. The band on the record are some of the best new and
young talent on today’s New York area scene, and they bring to life the
tremendous songwriting skill that Gibson possesses, along with an energy
that jumps out of the speakers.
Gibson has enjoyed a wide-ranging musical career which is deeply rooted in
the genres of jazz and funk. While reared in Oklahoma, Gibson’s musical
journey steered him to New York City, where he has performed with legends
like Slide Hampton, Jon Faddis, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, and James
Moody. In 2003, he was a finalist in the Thelonius Monk International Trombone
Competition and soon after, began releasing several critically acclaimed
recordings as a leader, as well as performing as a side man on many other
recordings.
Gibson stays busy performing with and composing for many diverse artists
around the world, including Roy Hargrove, Orrin Evans, George Gee Swing
Orchestra and Nickel, in addition to leading his own groups and teaching at
SUNY Geneseo and Columbia University.
